I've owned the "ORIGINAL" and the T2, and even inspected the "NEW" version of the original top-o-matic.
The "Original" lasted 1.5 years and required nothing more then a change of springs (which i upgraded to supermatic springs 1 time after 5 months).
The "T2" lasted a whole 2 months before it started grinding to a stop where the spoon level hits the tube cinching lever to release the tube. This led me to open it up and do the typical inspection...at which point i found that the pivot points are all made of some junky soft metal that loosens very quickly with use. Crucial contact points that use to be brass or hardened steel have become zinc coated chinese steel alloy or, in the case of the plate that forms and presses the tobacco, aluminum. The original was brass. Though brass is soft, it doesn't bend anywhere near as easily when formed into a block that thickness. My T2 aluminum block has bent just enough to rub the cage it seats into. This causes the block to come down on an angle and lock up frequently.
Angered, yesterday I went and found a "New" standard top-o-matic
at my local cig store. The owner let me open it up and inspect the internals once i explained my situation with the T2. Upon pulling that useless rubber base off I was presented with the exact same metals that Top used in the T2 and the brass block had been changed to aluminum. They retain the old tube release mechanism however they have gone cheap and reproduced it in the new cheapo Chinese steel alloy.
Like a moron i had fallen for the new chrome body of the T2, and since it worked fine the first month, i gave my upgraded "Original" to a friend. Now I'm rather P-O'd that I'm stuck trying to find an original supermatic since the supermatic 2 has been cheapened as well.
Incidentally, the new bright orange Gambler crank injector is a T2 in orange. All parts are 100% identical and therefor all problems will be the same.
Back to the old bugler hand roller for me....my thumb and wrist is just lovin it.....NOT!!!!
